This project is about family documentary photography. It is about people daily life, something they are doing or love to do every day. My aim was to capture natural movement and real emotions. In addition, I was trying to avoid strict planning and staging. I have started this for my Photography studies final work last year and decided to continue this year as a personal project.
What is documentary photography? It usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and historical events as well as everyday life. The photographer attempts to produce truthful, objective, and usually candid photography of the particular object, most often pictures of people (source Wikipedia).
What is family documentary photography? In everyday life, it never happens that all family members dress up the same outfit, sit nice and still in the tidy room. Looks a bit staged and fake, doesn’t it? Family life is more likely to the chaos, everyone is doing what they want or just need to do. They talk, argue, shout and laugh. Therefore, documentary family photography is there to capture the people the way they are at the particular time in their life.
In my opinion, the family documentary is essential for life. Photojournalism was always there to show the truth, emit emotion, make one feel love or pain, joy or fear, tell the real story. And this kind of story could be told about every family in the world and each of them would be different, however interesting in their own way.
That was the reason for making my decision – opportunity to create a storytelling photography, capturing feelings and emotions at the particular time of family life.
Here are some of my favourite images I have created for this project so far. There will be more soon because I am excited to continue this project and fill this gallery with more beautiful and unique families.
